Moxy Hotels is part of Marriott’s (NASDAQ: MAR) effort to appeal to a younger generation of travelers, with a trendy design and a lower price point than many of its other brands.
The Moxy brand of hotels, several of which have already opened in Europe, follow a rubric that has become increasingly common of late in hotel design: smaller rooms, and a larger, open lobby and lounge area that guests can use to work, play, meet with others or just hang out. Just this week, Hilton launched its own version with Tru by Hilton, and several similar concepts, including Washington’s first Pod hotel and the Hotel Hive, employ a similar strategy.
Moxy D.C. Hotel will incorporate a historic mansion located at the site, adding a 13-story tower behind the existing building. The design will include exposed concrete columns, polished concrete floors and open ceilings.
The D.C. Moxy will include the brand’s signature live Instagram wall, which broadcasts real-time images from travelers staying at Moxy locations around the world. Rooms will include motion-sensor, under-bed lighting, an open-storage area, a small workspace, the ability to stream media from guest devices on in-room screens, keyless entry and free Wi-Fi.
The ground floor will include self-service food and beverage, as well as a full-service restaurant and bar. The hotel is expected to open in the first quarter of 2017.
