Saratoga Automated Garage

Baltimore, MD

The project, located at 18 W. Saratoga Street within the West Side Revitalization area of Baltimore City, is a state-of-the-art, fully automated parking garage with 282 spaces. Twenty-two one- and two-bedroom rental apartments are incorporated into the design. To provide unobstructed views of the adjacent historic Preservation Maryland and Saint Paul's Rectory buildings, the structure steps back from the street above the garage entry level. A landscaped terrace will blend seamlessly with the manicured elevated lawn of the neighboring historic landmarks.

The first of its kind in the area, and the second in the United States, the automated garage consists of four separate parking modules, each containing a centrally located transporter device. In response to ths issues of circulation raised by the extremely narrow site, the design team has opted to include an innovative turntable system that will rotate a vehicle by 180 degrees, allowing for a single point of ingress and egress, maximizing efficiency and parking capacity.

How it works:
The vehicle is moved by a parking attendant to the transporter, which consists of a pallet on a mechanical lift that contains all necessary components to maneuver the vehicle within the parking module. The vehicle is lifted to the first parking level and rotated 180 degrees by a turntable system. Once the rotation is complete, the transporter continues to the destination parking level and moves the pallet into an available space. At the same time, a second lift retrieves either an exiting palletized vehicle or an empty pallet, lowering it to the ground level to prepare for the next incoming vehicle.
