Atlas Restaurant Group Focuses Efforts in Moxy DC

Atlas Restaurant Group, the prolific brand behind the glitzy Great Gatsby-themed Bygone perched atop Baltimore’s Four Seasons Hotel, is making a huge D.C. debut next spring by opening two separate dining destinations — including a splashy glass-enclosed rooftop bar — inside downtown’s modern Moxy Hotel.

The chic 13-story Marriott hotel (1011 K Street NW) is expected to open in pieces starting in October with the arrival of 200 guests rooms and a bohemian-style lobby bar run under the Moxy brand.

Come spring, Atlas’ first D.C. restaurant will occupy part of the first two floors and courtyard of the restored Victorian-era building next to the hotel, formerly the home of Harrison Allen, a Union General in the Civil War. A second glass-enclosed Atlas restaurant will be unveiled on the top of the building, which is now under construction. Both concepts “are yet to be determined,” team Atlas tells Eater.

It’s the first partnership with Atlas Restaurant Group and powerhouse D.C. developer Douglas Development.

Founded in 2012 by former professional lacrosse player and Baltimore native Alex Smith, Atlas Restaurant Group’s portfolio includes nine restaurants, many of which have helped put the up-and-coming Harbor East neighborhood on the map as a hot and hip nightlife destination. One of its most talked-about cocktail bars is the dark and sexy speakeasy The Elk Room, tucked in the courtyard alleyway of sister Italian eatery Tagliata and named one of this year’s The Best Bars in America” by Esquire. Customers are asked not to take photos at Elk Room, which also houses a members-only cigar bar in the back.

Other Baltimore and Boca Raton, Fla. restaurants under the Atlas umbrella include Harbor East Delicatessen & Pizzeria, Italian DiscoOuzo BayAzumi, and Loch Bar; 2019 is shaping up to be a huge expansion year for Atlas, with plans to open a total of seven additional restaurants in Baltimore, Boca Raton, Houston, and D.C.
